Amazon Offers Free Computing Power to AI Researchers

Amazon’s unit, which specializes in cloud computing, announced on Tuesday, November 12, that it will offer free computing power to researchers who want to use its custom artificial intelligence chips.

Amazon Offers Free Computing Power to AI Researchers

The media notes that the mentioned solution is an attempt to compete with Nvidia, which products are popular among the specified researchers.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it will offer credits to use its cloud data centers, which the company values at $110 million. These credits are intended for researchers who intend to tap Trainium, a chip for developing artificial intelligence models. This microcircuit competes with products of a similar category from Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), and Alphabet’s cloud unit.

AWS reported that researchers from Carnegie Mellon University and the University of California, Berkeley are already participating in the announced program. The company intends to provide 40,000 first-generation Trainium chips for the implementation of this program.

AWS is currently the largest cloud computing brand in terms of sales. Nowadays, the company is striving to gain consumers to use its artificial intelligence chips. It is worth noting that in this case, AWS uses an approach that differs from Nvidia’s strategy. To program Nvidia’s chips, most developers use Cuda, the company’s flagship software. As part of the appropriate approach, direct microcircuit programming is not provided. AWS plans to provide the corresponding opportunity to developers, which is a fundamental difference in its strategy.
