The man was arrested through the support of Europol
The Italian Postal and Communication Police have arrested a suspect accused of engaging a hitman who was hired via an assassination Dark Net webpage hosted by TOR network. The hitman was paid Bitcoins worth €10,000 to kill the suspect’s ex-girlfriend.
To identify and trace the dark web provider, a complex and urgent crypto-analysis was carried out by Europol. The suspect was then traced through a crypto exchange that has not been named. It provided the Italian police will further information.
The crypto provider was contacted by the Italian authorities and confirmed the data provided by the police. This investigation averted harm that would have been caused to the victim.
Other parties who supported the investigation include the Joint Cybercrime Action Taskforce (J-CAT) and Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3). The two provided operational expertise and analysis.
