Meta Unveils AI-Powered Assistant

Meta AI will integrate with Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and, eventually, the company’s mixed reality devices.

Meta Unveils AI-Powered Assistant

Speaking at the Meta Connect event on Sept. 27, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the company’s new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered assistant — Meta AI.

Meta AI is powered by Meta’s large language model, Llama 2. Built in partnership with Microsoft Bing, the virtual assistant will allow users access to real-time information from the internet.

As for the features, besides typical text-based answers, the bot can talk with users and generate images. For the latter function, the bot will leverage a new image generation tool called Emu. It was trained on 1.1 billion pieces of data, including photos and captions shared by users on Facebook and Instagram.

Unlike ChatGPT, Meta AI would be customized for for different use cases. Therefore, each of the company’s social media apps will get a slightly different Meta AI variation.

Speaking of entertainment-focused AI products, Zuckerberg also announced a collection of chatbots based on approximately 30 celebrity personalities, e.g. Paris Hilton, Snoop Dogg and former NFL player Tom Brady.

Since3 Sept. 27, the new AI assistant is available for a limited group of US-based users on Facebook Messenger, Instagram and WhatsApp. In October, the function will become available to users of the company’s new smart glasses, as well as its new Quest 3 VR device.

As competition in the generative AI segment rises, OpenAI has also introduced new features to its flagship ChatGPT product. Namely, information provided by ChatGPT will now be up-to-date and more reliable, as the tool will provide verifiable links. The data used by ChatGPT is also no longer limited to the sources published before September 2021. Earlier, it was announced that ChatGPT will now be able to see, hear, and speak.
