The number of Gmail active users reached 1,5 billion in 2018. It literally means that every fifth person on Earth is using a free Google email account. What a huge opportunity for money transfers! However, the function has rolled out only in the US where Gmail is responsible for 42.1% of all email accounts.

How it works

The $ symbol in the body of an email at your PC screen allows you to send money to any email account (not necessarily the Gmail one). In a mobile version, the “Attach” menu will help you with money transfers.

To be able to make a transfer, you should also be a Google Pay user under the same login ID. Google charges no fees to send money using your Google Pay balance, debit card (issued under any US-licensed bank), or your bank account (US only) linked to Google Pay.

You can receive emails with money attachments from other Gmail users as well as request them to send it. For instance, when you turn to an essay writing service to write essay for you.

The first time you receive money through Gmail, you’ll need to add a default debit card to transfer the money to. The types of cards accepted by Google services vary by location and product. Virtual credit cards and prepaid cards usually won’t work.

Transfer times vary depending on the type of payment method you use.

Using Money in Gmail step by step

The procedures for desktop and mobile apps differ a little.

  • Desktop

When you create a new email, click “Compose”. Enter the recipient’s address, subject, and text of the message as usual. Then click $. Enter the amount to send, choose a payment method, and press “Attach”. Check if everything is correct and send the email.

If you choose “Request money” instead of “Attach”, the recipient will get a money request from you. You can add multiple addresses if you need to collect money from a group of people.

To accept the attached money from someone, open the message and click “Claim money”. If you haven’t claimed that sum within two weeks, the money will return to the sender’s account.

Before claiming transfers, make sure you have a valid bank card attached to your Google Pay.

  • Android and iOS

Tap “Compose” > “Attach” > “Send money”.

Enter the amount and payment method.

Tap “Attach money”. Optionally add a comment. Tap “Done”. Now the message can be sent.

Tap “Compose” > “Attach” > “Request money” to ask for a transfer. The next steps are the same.

To claim money sent to you through Gmail the first time:

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. Open the message with the attached money.
  3. Tap “Transfer to bank” and then “Add debit card”.
  4. Enter your card details.
  5. Tap Claim money.

Limitations

There are limits on how much you can send with Google Pay.

  • Single transaction: Up to $10,000 USD
  • In 7 days: Up to $10,000 USD
  • Florida residents: Up to $3,000 USD every 24 hours.
  • Transactions over $2,500: The recipient will need to add a bank account to claim the money.
  • The function doesn’t work with Gmail Go – a lightweight Android app with a simplified interface.

Google Pay works on desktop, tablets, and phones running Android 5.0+ or iOS 8.0+.

Currently, the service only allows domestic transfers.

The feature was previously tested in the UK and India but currently works in the US only. No announcements about the regional expansion are to be found.
